U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary District 7

District 7, Public Affairs

Welcome to the District Seven Public Affairs Website

The Public Affairs officers at every level from Flotilla to District have but one goal in mind—to promote the USCG Auxiliary, our Flotillas, our Divisions and our District. Our primary outlets are the external media such as local or national newspapers, radio and television stations and even billboards on the highways.

We use several means to do our job:

  1. We keep in close contact with our Bridges and our fellow staff members
  2. We frequently check the websites at all levels
  3. We attend every training opportunity available to us
  4. We listen at staff meetings, we ask questions, we take pictures-- we are involved
  5. We show the Bridges that we are an integral and important part of their operation by the publicity we generate for the unit, the number of students we helped to attract to our various public education courses and the new members who join because of something we wrote.

The 3-day Public Affairs course, AUX-12, is one of the most informative C-Schools that an Auxiliarist can attend. The 80 or so students selected each year are a very small fraction of the almost 3,000 Auxiliary PA and PB officers nationwide. To be a part of this very exclusive group, please get your Short Term Training request submitted as soon as the listing comes out—normally in late September. This is one course you will be really glad you attended. For more information on C-Schools, please go to the Auxiliary National website at http://nws.cgaux.org . Complete the homework and then go on for the ultimate goal—designation as a Public Affairs Specialist. At this time there are less than 100 PA Specialists in the entire 30,000 plus auxiliary members.

The Public Affairs Department works extremely closely with the Publications Department (PB). The District 7 newsletter, The Breeze, is a nationally award-winning periodic publication that is designed to inform the District 7 members of the many wonderful things going on. Each of us is encouraged to submit articles, photographs, lessons learned, questions and suggestions. I must repeat---both Departments are highly interested in articles and photographs. They may be published locally in the civilian media or throughout the Auxiliary in the many Auxiliary publications. The PA and PB staffs at every level have an intense desire to help budding authors. We promise you that you will never hear a derogatory remark. Why? First, we have all been there and Second----we are a Team. We are family.

The District Public Affairs Department has five highly qualified and enthusiastic Assistant District Staff Officers (ADSO):

The ADSOs and I are available to you 24/7. We promise you our complete support in working with you to publicize the events that make your unit unique. Anyone can write an article or press release. The PA and the PB departments will be more than happy to review and suggest appropriate changes and assist you in getting your words published.
